Lindsey Stroud

Founder & President

Lindsey Stroud is the Founder and President of THR101, originally launched in 2020 as an informal research blog and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in June 2025. Stroud has been researching tobacco and nicotine issues since 2016 and has held various policy and research roles at free-market think tanks. Since 2020, she has produced comprehensive 50-state analyses using national datasets to examine adult and youth smoking, vaping, and nicotine-use trends across all U.S. states and Washington, D.C.


Throughout her career, Stroud has authored numerous opinion editorials, research reports, data analyses, and policy guides focused on tobacco harm reduction. She has served as a panelist and moderator at conferences around the world and has hosted multiple podcasts highlighting the science and policy behind harm reduction. Prior to entering the public policy arena, Stroud worked for state and federal lawmakers in Virginia and Minnesota. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Government from the College of William and Mary.

Nick Orlando

Board Member

Nick Orlando is President of the Florida Smoke Free Association (FSFA), where he leads statewide efforts to protect adult access to safer nicotine alternatives and defend the independent vapor industry. Orlando has been a central figure in Florida’s legislative and regulatory debates, working alongside policymakers, public health stakeholders, and national advocacy groups. His leadership has helped preserve consumer choice and promote science-based, balanced regulation. With a background in entrepreneurship and coalition-building, Orlando brings strategic insight into the challenges facing harm reduction advocacy.

Daniel "Danny" Gillis

Board Member

Danny Gillis has spent more than 12 years advancing tobacco harm reduction through small-business leadership and state-level advocacy. He is the Executive Director of the Tennessee Smoke Free Association (TSFA) and owner of Sevier Vapor, where he has helped thousands of adults transition away from combustible cigarettes through access to high-quality vapor products.

Gillis entered the industry after vaping helped him quit smoking following 21 years of use – a personal success that drives his commitment to public education, responsible retail practices, and evidence-based policy. Through his work with TSFA, he has collaborated with state agencies, monitored legislation, and mobilized independent businesses to defend adult access to safer nicotine alternatives.

 

A strong advocate for science-based regulation, Gillis routinely highlights research showing vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking and works to dispel misinformation that threatens public health progress. He has testified before lawmakers, engaged in statewide outreach, and continues to champion policies that protect youth while preserving harm-reduction options for adults.

N.H. Representative James Spillane

Board Member

James Spillane is a six-term New Hampshire State Representative and Chairman of the House Fish and Game and Marine Resources Committee. He has been a consistent advocate for lower taxes, responsible budgeting, and adult access to safer nicotine alternatives, championing vaping technology as a key tool for tobacco harm reduction.

He holds a B.A. in English from Southern New Hampshire University and an Associate’s Degree in Technical Writing from UMass Lowell. A published author and Senior Technical Writer, Spillane brings both professional and legislative experience to his role.

In 2016, he founded the New Hampshire Veteran Sportsman Foundation, which has provided free hunting and fishing licenses to more than 200 veterans.

Lisa Ciarlone

Board Member

Lisa Ciarlone is a longtime tobacco harm reduction advocate based in Rhode Island, where she has worked for more than a decade to advance science-based policies and protect adult access to smoke-free alternatives. Ciarlone has collaborated with advocacy groups, researchers, and small business owners to educate policymakers on the importance of harm reduction strategies, especially for vulnerable and underserved communities. Her background includes extensive work in nonprofit outreach, community engagement, and grassroots mobilization, bringing essential on-the-ground experience to THR101’s mission.

Tristan Thompson

Board Member

Tristan Thompson is a national vaping advocate who serves as Board President of the United Vapers Alliance and leads The Vaping Legion, a prominent grassroots organization within the harm-reduction community. He is widely recognized for his leadership in organizing advocacy campaigns, public rallies, and media engagement efforts focused on protecting adult access to safer nicotine alternatives and influencing federal regulatory policy.

Christian Josi

Board Member

Christian Josi is the Founder and Managing Director of C. JOSI & COMPANY, a specialized media relations and public affairs consultancy he launched in 2014 after decades of experience in government, politics, entertainment, and senior roles within leading communications firms. His work centers on high-stakes communications, coalition building, and strategic alliance development, where he is widely recognized for his expertise and discretion.

In addition to advising clients, Christian is a frequent commentator and contributor to numerous publications, and he regularly assists organizations in crafting and placing opinion pieces, speeches, and other high-impact communications.

Outside of public affairs, Christian maintains an active parallel career in music. A former recording artist, he continues to produce music for others on select projects.

Christian brings deep communications experience and strategic insight to the THR101 Board.

Dr. Marewa Glover

Board Member

Dr. Marewa Glover is one of the world’s leading researchers in tobacco harm reduction, public health behavior, and Indigenous health equity. Based in New Zealand, she is the founder of the Centre of Research Excellence: Indigenous Sovereignty & Smoking, where her work focuses on culturally informed approaches to reducing smoking-related harms. With more than 30 years of experience, Dr. Glover has authored over 120 scientific publications, advised governments, and received international recognition for her contributions to harm reduction and public health. She is widely regarded as a pioneering voice for compassionate, evidence-based tobacco policy.

Marc Slis

Board Member

Marc Slis is a respected tobacco harm reduction advocate, researcher, and small-business owner from Michigan. After successfully quitting smoking through vaping, Slis became a prominent voice for consumers and independent vapor businesses. In 2019, he gained national attention for his successful lawsuit against Michigan’s emergency flavor ban, securing a landmark legal victory that protected adult access to flavored vapor products statewide. Slis has testified before state and federal lawmakers, contributed to scientific discussions, and worked with advocacy groups to promote balanced, evidence-based regulation.
